I saw an exhibition on Jazz, Matisse’s work with cutouts he created in the latter part of his career. In his 70’s he developed a new look and feel, incorporating elements from his earlier style.
Faced with abdominal cancer and limited mobility, he redefined his art and pushed past the limits he had known to expand his style and stay true to who he was- an artist. He did not give up creating due to his situation.
Often we define ourselves by our circumstances, both past and present. We accept that explanation and do not push past our perceived limits. Comfort and fear, both of the unknown and others’ reactions, keep us static.
Pushing our limits, redefining our beliefs and expanding who we know ourselves to be takes courage. It is an art, not a science.
