As we commemorate Memorial Day it is an appropriate time to pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in battle and their families.
Soldiers exhibit tremendous courage and team work. They excel at the highest levels. In fact, some Olympic team members train with the SEALs to mentally and physically prepare for the pressure and challenge of the Games. Their leadership training permeates many aspects of life.
Through their service, these men and women remind us of three important traits in leadership.
- Focus on a goal There is a mission and everything they do prepares them for serving that mission. At work, how clear are you and your team on your primary mission? How do you communicate it and how often?
- Constantly strive to do better Continuous improvement is ongoing and so is the necessity to adapt to the changing environment. How willing are you to admit and learn from mistakes? How quickly do you correct actions and decisions that are ineffective or going in the wrong direction?
- Practice Soldiers practice intense drills and simulations in order to prepare for real life circumstances. This preparation allows them to perform well under pressure. How do you prepare to perform well under pressure? Who supports you in development?
We pay tribute to those who have died so that we can live freely.
