A friend’s daughter has a kindergarten teacher who stands at the class entrance door each morning and asks the children as they arrive, “Do you need a hug, handshake or high five today?”
This teacher is a true servant leader. She doesn’t decide what the kids need. She asks them where they are so she can meet them there.
She listens. This is one of the most important skills in leadership. It builds relationships and helps us to understand.
This teacher also sets the environment for learning. She literally allows the children to leave things at the door before entering the classroom.
If they have had a bad morning or things on their minds, they have an opportunity to put it behind them. They can focus on the present and turn their attention to learning.
We have many roles as leaders. Three of the most important are:
- Meet people where they are
- Listen to the needs of others and circumstances
- Create an environment for thriving
Applying these strategies will give each of us an “A” in the classroom of life.
