Japan recently won the Women’s World Cup in soccer. While many in the US were disappointed as our team lost, Japan celebrated a national victory. The team had lost in every prior match up with the US.
Given the recent tragedy in Japan, this was a national morale booster and sent a message that the country could overcome adversity.
It reminded me of the Saints Super Bowl victory which shifted the mindset and momentum of New Orleans after Katrina and the devastating years that followed.
Watching the soccer players on both sides brought to mind questions about both individual and team tenacity.
- How do you or have you overcome adversity?
- What or who inspires you to keep going?
- What qualities do you possess to support you?
We all face challenges and adverse circumstances. Recognizing how you handle them, the messages you communicate (to yourself and others), what has worked in the past and what you are capable of will give you the will and confidence to keep going.
As in soccer, the ball is constantly moving. Understanding these dynamics and having self-awareness will support you in moving toward your goal.
