Over the weekend I saw the movie, Moneyball. It is about Billy Beane, manager of the Oakland Athletics, and the team’s quest to win a World Series with a low budget and the loss of three superstar players.
Beane realizes that the team cannot win by using the same old recruiting and scouting techniques. His motto is “Adapt or die.” He revolutionizes baseball by introducing a mathematical strategic system calculated to get men on base, thus scoring runs which leads to wins.
In the movie, like in most organizations, when change is introduced, people are often slow to accept it. They resist and frequently feel left out.
The team became successful and began winning when Beane spent time with the players and explained the strategy. He showed each of them what their role was and how they could make an impact.
How well do you and your team adapt and implement new strategies? How effective is your communication during transition? What expectations are you setting?
Change is inevitable. How we adapt is our choice. Is your strategy striking out or landing you on base?
