Culture Lessons from New OrleansI was at the French Quarter Festival in my hometown of New Orleans over the weekend.

As anyone who has visited or lived there can attest, it has a culture all its own. The music, food, expressions and people create a joie de vie that is unique.

Locals take tremendous pride, even amidst the challenges New Orleans Festivalthat the city faces. It is this culture and pride that have enabled the city to rebound after the devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

When employees feel pride in their organization, it translates to success. They will go the extra mile for each other and the customer. They will be an ambassador and speak positively to the public. In addition, this positivity shines internally and impacts success.

Culture also plays a key role.

  • What rituals exist in your organization that create its culture?
  • What behaviors are the norm and what is taboo? (I don’t think anything of seeing some things in the French Quarter that in other environments would seem strange!)
  • What is the metaphorical music playing throughout the workplace?

Just as my hometown has created a culture of its own, we can proactively develop one in our organizations that generate pride.

Like the bumper sticker that so many New Orleanians have says, “Proud to call it home.” Make your work environment a place that people are proud to call home!
