While in Columbus yesterday I attended an Ohio State basketball game where the 1960 team was honored for their 50th anniversary championship.
Bobby Knight, a former team member who went on to coach Indiana and other schools, gave a talk to honor Fred Taylor, the coach of the OSU team.
He said that when we see a great painting we know that there was a great painter behind it. When we see a beautiful building we know that there was a talented architect behind it. Similarly, when we see a winning team, there is a great coach behind it. The affection that this team felt for their coach was palpable.
As a coach, our role is to recruit top talent and develop our team members so they can perform at their best. In addition, we want to foster their leadership so they can grow others. Ideally we can leave a legacy of a high performing team who remembers us fondly even after we are gone.
What are you doing to create a great team as the coach behind it or the player on the court?
