My 96 year-old great aunt passed away last week. In addition to being the matriarch of our family, she was an inspiring role model who was warm, outgoing, sharp, spunky, hip and fun.
An entrepreneur with her own business in the ’50’s and ’60’s, she understood people and customer service delivery.
Camille was a “C” level executive even before the word came into vogue. She brought these “C” qualities to life.
Connection
Camille was a connector. She connected to people, ideas, activities and history. Her outgoing, personable style made her approachable and people of all generations and backgrounds were drawn to her.
Curiosity
Camille was always curious. She was interested in many things and people of all ages. She learned the computer and email when she was in her ’80’s and they were in their infancy.
Control- lack of
Camille was not controlling. She was open-minded and flexible. She would go with the flow. At 89 when she had to relocate from New Orleans, her lifelong home, after Katrina, she did it willingly and without complaining. (Another “C” word in which she did not engage). She soon knew everyone in her new home.
When one of her caretakers was late getting to work after a night at the casino, Camille did not reprimand her for the delayed arrival time. Instead she asked, “Did you win? Did you have fun?”
By bringing these three qualities to our relationships and how we serve as leaders, we can create years of joyful and fulfilling interactions.
This tip is in memory of my beloved great aunt, Camille Baer. I hope she has a terrific seat at the slot machines at the Casino in the sky.
