I was on a terrific team last week for a five-hour engagement. Our mission was to have the lowest score after playing 18 holes of golf.
The components that worked well were the following:
- Each person participated and contributed shots throughout. One person did not carry the entire team (except on one hole)!
- We celebrated our successes when we made birdies and an eagle. We gave the golfer’s high five and I enthusiastically leapt off the ground!
- We gave each other advice on putting and what clubs to use for different shots. This support allowed us to get better and learn from each person’s experience.
- We were accountable. We had to use each person’s drive and play our own ball after a certain number of shots.
- We had fun!
These five ingredients are applicable to any team in any circumstance. Their essence will sustain your group for much longer than a round of golf!
