Yesterday I saw an amazing show of leadership on the football field during the Pittsburgh/Indianapolis game.
Quarterback Peyton Manning waved off the punt team that his coach sent on the field on 4th down and 2 yards.
Peyton decided that his team would go for the 1st down, overriding his coach’s call. His gamble paid off. His team made a touchdown.
Peyton exemplified leadership in this moment. He showed belief in himself, confidence in his team, a vision for what was possible and a drive to be the best and not settle. The energy in the entire stadium changed.
His coach, Dungy, empowered him to make the decision as the person on the field. Dungy trusted his players. He was going to hold them accountable. These are key ingredients to developing leaders.
While you aren’t playing for a Super Bowl ring, you have an opportunity in every situation and with every decision to show leadership.
