Over the weekend we lost the Notorious RBG.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a legal and intellectual scholar.
She was a legend who fought for justice,
women’s rights and equal rights.
Some compared her to Thurgood Marshall.
She fought tirelessly for equality for women.
Those who knew her well said she was,
“decent, kind, thoughtful, and funny.”
Her legacy will live on for generations of women,
gay people and the underserved in society who will
have a more equal footing as a result
of the steps in her life’s journey.
She was a warrior throughout her life
until the end, battling several episodes of cancer.
Her famous workouts became inspiration
for comedians, millennials, and the elderly.
As she entered the workforce after graduating
first in her class from Columbia Law School,
she said there were three strikes against:
- She was a woman.
- She was Jewish.
- She was a mother.
She fought tirelessly against sexism, Anti-Semitism
and discrimination so others could have an even playing field.
At the same time, she showed grace, calm and style.
And in a world divided by partisanship and animosity
where people struggle to be friends with those of different opinions,
she showed us that you can still see beyond that
and care for the individual beneath their perspectives.
Her unique friendship with the late Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia
exemplified that respect can still exist
when you stand at opposite ends of the spectrum on an issue.
The words legal, legend, and legacy
all have one thing in common- leg.
She gave us all a leg to stand on
by helping to create a world filled with more justice and equality.
And for that, we are forever grateful.
