I saw the long running Broadway play, A Chorus Line, over the weekend for its 40th anniversary revival.
The music and lyrics were still terrific and it resonated differently on many levels this time around.
Three factors stood out that we can all apply to our teams.
- All the people auditioning to be chorus line members had their individual experiences and it influenced how they showed up in the interview. The chorus line, like our teams, was comprised of several different personalities.
- The chorus line needed to act as a complete, well-choreographed unit. While the individual members had their own stories or agendas, the system had to be unified and work together.
- The director in this revival was more empathetic and understanding then I remember in the original version. His tone of voice and demeanor showed his genuine concern about the cast members. He also wanted to make sure they would be able to move well together as a line. As leaders, combining direction and vision with caring concern gives us powerful results. A chorus line adds energy and vitality to a performance. Are your team’s movements aligned?
