The Olympics started on Friday and inspiring stories accompany the start of the games. One stood out to me as an example of persistence and flexibility.
Lola Jones was a track and field star. In the last summer Olympics she placed fourth in her race by seconds. She had been a hurdler and track athlete for most of her life. While she was disappointed with her finish, she did not give up on her Olympic dream to win gold.
Some friends encouraged her to switch sports and pursue bobsledding. She agreed and began training in this new sport. She made the Olympic team, winning a silver medal in tryouts. She is loving the challenge, teamwork and camaraderie she shares with her teammates.
She has learned a new sport, adapted to a new environment and continued to pursue her dream to win gold.
Many of us get stuck in ruts, give up on our goals or lose our passion and interest when we do not succeed, are disappointed or things do not turn out as would like.
Lola Jones inspires us to remain flexible, never give up and surround yourself with a supportive team.
You can generate the Olympic spirit in whatever endeavor you pursue. You don’t need to be on a Wheaties box to be a champion!
