I was moved watching the opening dedication of the 9/11 Memorial Museum. It is a testament to resilience, courage and compassion.
Survivors, parents of lost ones, Police, firefighters and first responders shared their stories from that harrowing day. The kindness and support they showed and that was shown to them and countless others was inspiring.
The objects in the museum, many ordinary items, are powerful symbols that remind us of the randomness of the day. These include the stairs to freedom, a tower standing with photos and inscriptions to loved ones, shoes worn and taken off on the 62nd floor and a red bandana.
This last object was worn by a 23 year old financier who sacrificed his life while saving others, escorting co-workers to the stairwell.
Strangers came together to show kindness and compassion. It reminds us how we can affect each other’s lives, especially during crisis. Ordinary people did extraordinary things.
Resilience is fueled by kindness, gratitude and relationships. This Museum helps us to remember the power of humanity.
