The March Madness Final Four Tournament has been filled with nail-biting endings, amazing shooting and stories of surprising upsets and victories.
Resilience is at the heart of this year’s final match up. Many of the teams have unexpectedly been “bounced out” or “bounced back.”
Last year Virginia, as a number one seed, made history by losing to a number 16 seed (the lowest seed in the tournament). Rather than let that defeat define them going forward, they have used that as motivation and are now playing for this season’s championship title.
Resilient people don’t wallow or dwell on failures or setbacks; They acknowledge the situation, learn from their mistakes and then move forward.
How then, do we adapt and encourage ourselves to recover from difficult circumstances and find the strength to go forward?
According to Ken Ginsburg, MD, FAAP, there are 7 C’s to Resilience.
- Competence
- Confidence
- Connection
- Character
- Contribution
- Coping
- Control
By focusing on these characteristics we can develop strategies that create a foundation on which we can build. And a strong foundation allows us to “bounce” back from whatever adversity we may face!
