5 Coping Strategies for These Tumultuous TimesThe unexpected 10 storms in the Gulf of Mexico this year
seem to mirror the stormy conditions that we find ourselves in right now.
We are facing multiple crises and stressful events:

• Covid 19
• A spiraling economy
• Climate catastrophes-wildfires, hurricanes
• Pending election and strongly divided electorate
• Nonstop news cycle and social media

It’s no wonder that a recent statistic said that
40% of Americans are anxious or depressed.

Given the current climate we face,
I want to share five evidence-based coping strategies
by Yale Professor of Psychology, Dr. Laurie Santos.

While these may sound familiar,
they are good reminders of the power we possess to cope.
We can control our well-being in the midst of chaos.

  1. Exercise
One study found that a half-hour of cardio
every morning is as effective as a prescription of Zoloft.
    Get moving!
  2. Gratitude
Writing down 3-5 things daily that you’re grateful for
can improve your physical health and well-being in 2-3 weeks.
Your list can be simple things that make you smile.
  3. Sleep
One way to enhance your sleep is to eliminate technology
before going to bed. Stay off social media, email, the news
(if it upsets you). Let your phone sleep in another room.
  4. Get Social
Santos says that happy people are more social and prioritize time with others.
Despite social distancing, you can still connect for
weekly Zoom family or friend calls, share spa nights or
wine tastings over the screen or use the phone to call a friend.
(I’ve shared meals and religious holidays on Zoom, and it’s been terrific to be
with others with whom I wouldn’t have otherwise celebrated.)
Even texts to let others know you are thinking of them can create connection.
  5. Be With Your Emotions
When times are tough, we want to run from them. Instead, let it RAIN!
Recognize – Notice how your body responds to situations.
Accept – Let the emotion in and sit with it. Santos says,
                   “You’re good” to soothe herself.
Investigate – Notice how the emotion feels inside your body.
Are your neck muscles constricting, or is your chest tightening?
Nurture – Show self-compassion. How would you talk to a friend or a child?

Given the forecast for the next several months,
there is a high probability that we will still be facing tumultuous times.
I encourage you to incorporate these coping strategies to help you navigate
the waters going forward.
